Our 50x concentrated Premium Reef Mix is blended from the following two nutritionally important alga:
Tetraselmis suecica
Chaetoceros muelleri
50x more concentrated than a non-processed algae means it offers superb value for money! Our algae is grown in our own laboratory where we concentrate and blend the algae to our specific requirements.
Directions for use (as a guideline only):
Use 1 ml per 100 L
Turn off skimmers and UV sterilisers for at least 15 mins.
Premium Reef Mix must be stored in a refrigerator and should be used within 12 weeks of opening, and before the best before date (usually 3-4 months from date of purchase).
A sulphurous odour (Dimethyl Sulphide) is typical of live concentrated algae, and is a natural by-product of live algae that will not harm aquaria. It is especially noticeable the more concentrated the algae product is.
Settlement is also typical of stored phytoplankton so please shake before each use to re-suspend settled cells. Settlement will be more prominent with a 50x concentrate.
What is a concentrate?
Essentially, we take 5 litres of phytoplankton that has been grown to it's optimum density, and then we process it to remove excess water (and thus excess nutrient), leaving us with 100 ml of concentrated algae - a concentrate of 50x. Removing the excess water allows for a more convenient and manageable product.
We start with a 5 L jug of an alga species - in the example below we are using Tetraselmis suecica........
.....we then process it, and the result is shown below.
The small beaker contains 100 ml of the concentrated alga that will be used alongside other alga species in our reef blends. The supernatant in the 5 L jug is then recycled to minimise waste.
The description above is an over-simplification of the process, but serves as a good illustration of what a concentrate is.
Why you should buy from Reefshotz
- Our algae is not grown at home! It is grown in a lab under tightly controlled conditions.
- It's a lot easier to store 100 ml in the fridge than it is 5 litres!
- The concentration process effectively removes excess water and any excess nutrient that might be present, leaving cleaner algae cells.
- Preservative and Additive Free! There's nothing extra added to our Premium Reef Blend.
- Grown in Wales, UK means a reduced carbon footprint.
